DETAIL RETAIL

Brief:
"Develop a concept that captures the essence of the brand’s identity (analyse the identity, target market, touch points, competitors & positioning, product range and the like). Propose an insertion for shop AG4 which realises this concept spatially and visually."

Description:
As a group of five, we were given Jean Paul Gaultier as our brand and created a perfume shop in the given location of an airport. Using his personal history as an activist and the perfume bottles as inspiration the shop expresses many curved shapes (resembling the human figure Jean Paul is fascinated with) and pathways that represent catwalks and runways that the inspirational models use. Research of previous adverts and perfume bottle also influenced the final design through the colour scheme and the shapes found throughout.
Following on from the group work aspect, the brief then specified us to individually develop a design aspect from the previously confirmed layout. I chose to focus on the checkout desk and designed it with the same inspirations and influences of Jean Paul Gaultier adverts and perfume bottle design. I chose to use the famous stripes found on many adverts and perfume bottles to create a simple pattern on the face of the desk, within the stripes are lighting strips and a display shelf. The original shape of the desk was also changed to match more with the other display cabinets using the human figure as an influence for the curves.
The final aspect of this brief was to design the construction of the chosen design aspect and create a representative model. The structure of the desk consists of several vertical timber planks to create the curve of the desk and four timber panels in the shape of the desk that create the top, bottom and shelf unit encased in a metal effect laminate. The model that was created was a section of the desk exposing the structure of the desk and the front design (materials used on the model are representative), to build this model I created the design in Auto CAD and used a laser cutter to cut the pieces out of MDF wood.
