MONKS ABBEY

Long cad section

Brief:
"Lincoln City Council wish to implement a projection house within the ruins of Monks Abbey where films can be enjoyed by the public. Your brief can derive from the cinematic interpretations project or can relate to a new concept. The insertion will be a contemporary interpretation and will deal with enclosed internal spaces, as well as exposed elements (where relevant). The structure will sit within the walls and only protrude by 2m at the entrance and 2m above the structure. Where necessary, some of the required spaces can sit outside of the abbey."

Description:
The decided brief for Monks Abbey was to create a cinematic space that connects the younger children with the teenagers in a positive situation as many feel pushed out or unwanted in the presence of other kids. The tunnel aspect and the external “climb wall” access is to appeal to the younger kids introducing the act of play whereas the counter area below (operated by volunteers and closed off when not present) is more appealing to the teenagers as a “hangout” space. The cinema screen is placed on the sloped roof and is accompanied by lay down comfort seating. The whole design is an insertion piece that doesn’t affect the original walls of Monks Abbey.
